Playdough

Needed:
2 cups baking soda
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cornstarch

TO MAKE: Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over medium heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.

Natures Playdough

Needed:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 T oil
2 T cream of tartar
beet, spinach, and carrot juice

to make: Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the dough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the vegetable juices to make green, pink, and orange.

Kool-Aid Play Dough

NEEDED:
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
2 cups boiling water with 1 pkg. Kool-aid (any flavor)
3 T corn oil
1/2 cup salt
1 T alum

TO MAKE: Mix ingredients and knead with flour (may take up to 1 extra cup). Use more if the dough draws moisture in high humidity. Keeps well, has a nice fragrance and is very colorful and very flexible.

Silly putty

needed:
2 parts white glue
1 part liquid starch

TO make: Mix ingredients and let dry until workable. Add more glue or starch if necessary. May not work on humid days. Store in airtight container.

Face paints

Needed:
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon water
1/2 teaspoon cold cream
1 to 2 drops food coloring

to make: In small bowl, combine water and cornstarch. Mix in cold cream. Add food coloring. Washes off with soap and water! What a cheap way to enjoy this kind of thing. Great for organizations also , who use this art to make money!

Cinnamon-Applesauce Ornaments

Needed:
1 cup cinnamon
3/4 cup applesauce
1/4 cup white glue

To Make: Mix all ingredients well until they form a dough. Flatten the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Keep in mind that the dough will be quite dry, and can be tricky to work with.

Use cookie cutters to cut out festive holiday shapes. Use a drinking straw to punch a small hole in the top of each ornament if you plan to hang them. Keep them flat and move them to a warm, dry spot for 48 hours to allow them to dry. Turn each ornament over every few hours to dry on each side. Alternatively, put them in a warm (not hot!) oven for several hours.

Bubbles

Needed:
For about 1 gallon:
Use a gallon milk jug. Make sure it is clean.
Mix 2 1/2 c Joy Dish Soap (or another brand), 1/2 c glycerin and 12 1/2 c. water. Stir gently!

Side Walk Chalk

Needed:
1 cup warm water
about 1 1/2 - 2 cups Plaster of Paris
Powdered or liquid tempera paint
Disposable plastic container, like a large yogurt or cottage cheese container
Large plastic spoon or chopstick for stirring
Molds for sidewalk chalk. You can use small paper cups, egg cartons, small yogurt containers, or duct tape and toilet paper rolls.

To Make: Prepare the molds ahead of time if you are using the toilet paper rolls. Wrap duct tape around the rolls and cover one end of the tube. (The cardboard will disintegrate if you don't use the duct tape). Line the tubes with waxed paper to prevent the chalk from sticking. You can line the egg cartons, if they aren't the slick styrofoam kind, with plastic wrap to prevent sticking also.

Pour the warm water into the disposable container. Stir in small amounts of Plaster of Paris until the water doesn't absorb any more powder. The mixture should be the consistency of frosting - stiff, but still easily stirred.

Add a few teaspoons of tempera paint. For pastel colors, mix colors with white tempera. Stir thoroughly for solid-colored chalk or leave swirled for a marbled look.

Pour the mixture into the molds. Let hem dry completely. This can take anywhere from half an hour to a day or more depending on humidity and amount of water in the mixture.

Remove the chalk from the molds and it's ready to use.
